Top Ten Paintings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Top Ten Paintings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa was born in an aristocratic family in Albi (south of France), on November 24, 1864. Henri had a bad health and so he started drawing and painting at young age. At age 12 Henri broke his left leg and at age 14 he broke his right leg as well. The bones in his leg never healed properly and his legs stopped growing, while the rest of his body continued their natural growing process. It is obvious that this problem was mentally very difficult to cope with for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Theo Van Rysselberghe1

Théo (Théophile) van Rysselberghe was born in Ghent on November 23, 1862 to a French-speaking bourgeois family, he studied first at the Academy of Ghent under Theo Canneel and from 1879 at the Academy of Brussels under the directorship of Jean-François Portaels. The North African paintings of Portaels had started an orientalist fashion in Belgium. Their impact would strongly influence the young Theo van Rysselberghe. Between 1882 and 1888 he made three trips to Morocco, staying there a total of one year and half.

Self-Portrait with Cigarette

Cross was born in Douai on May 20, 1856 and grew up in Lille. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. His early works, portraits and still lifes, were in the dark colors of realism, but after meeting with Claude Monet in 1883, he painted in the brighter colors of Impressionism. In 1884, Cross co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendants. He went on to become one of the principal exponents of Neo-Impressionism. He began his Pointillist period after spending time with Paul Signac in 1904. His later works are Fauvist, perhaps influenced by his acquaintance with Henri Matisse. His final years, plagued by rheumatism, were spent in Saint-Clair, where he died May 16, 1910.

Self Portrait1

Vincent was born in Zundert, Netherlands. Son of Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Theodorus van Gogh, a Protestant minister, a profession that Vincent found appealing and to which he would be drawn to a certain extent later in his life. His sister described him as a serious and introspective child. At age 16 Vincent started to work for the art dealer Goupil & Co. in The Hague. His brother Theo, four years his junior and with whom Vincent cherished a lifelong friendship, would join the company later. This friendship is amply documented in the vast amount of letters they sent each other. These letters have been preserved and were published in 1914. They provide a lot of insight into the life of the painter, and show him to be a talented writer with a keen mind. Theo would support Vincent financially throughout his life.
