Chagall was born Moishe Zakharovich Shagalov (Moishe Segal) in Vitebsk, Russian Empire (now in Belarus) on July 7, 1887, the eldest of eight children in the close-knit Jewish family headed by his father, a herring merchant. His mother’s name was Felga-Ita. This happy, though impoverished period of his life, shows up throughout Chagall’s work.

Top Ten Paintings/Works of Art by Maurits Cornelius Escher

Top Ten Paintings/Works of Art by Maurits Cornelius Escher

Maurits Cornelius Escher was born on June 17, 1898 in Leeuwarden (Friesland), The Netherlands. His father George Arnold Escher, who was a civil engineer, and his mother Sarah Gleichman Escher, had three sons of which Maurits was the youngest. The Escher family lived in Leeuwarden for the first 5 years of Maurits Cornelius’ life in a large house called ‘Princessehof’. This house would later be turned into a museum to host work from M.C. Escher, but not exclusively from him. In 1903 the Escher family moved to Arnhem where Maurits took carpentry and piano lessons until he was thirteen. From 1912 until 1918, Maurits Cornelius Escher attended secondary school. Though he excelled at drawing, his grades were generally poor. He never succeeded in his final exam, so M.C. has never officially graduated. M.C. then started studying at the Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts. he briefly studied architecture, but then made a switch to decorative arts. After three years, Maurits decided he had gained enough experience in drawing and woodcutting and left the school.

Top Ten Paintings by René Magritte

Top Ten Paintings by René Magritte

René Magritte

René François Ghislain Magritte (November 21, 1898 – August 15, 1967) was a Surrealist artist, born in Lessines, Belgium. In 1912, Magritte’s mother committed suicide by drowning herself in the river Sambre. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels for two years until 1918. During this period he first met Georgette Berger, whom he married in 1922. Magritte produced his first surrealist painting, Le jockey perdu in 1926, and held his first exhibition in Brussels in 1927. The exhibition was not a success: critics heaped abuse on it. He was depressed by the failure of his show and he moved to Paris.

Top Ten Paintings by Salvador Dalí

Top Ten Paintings by Salvador Dalí

Dalí was born on May 11, 1904, in the town of Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, the son of comfortable middle-class notary Salvador Dalí i Cusí and Felipa Domenech Ferres. Dalí attended Municipal Drawing School, where he first received formal art training. In 1916 Dalí discovered modern painting on a summer vacation to Cadaqués with the family of Ramon Pichot, a local artist who made regular trips to Paris. The next year Dalí’s father organized an exhibition of his charcoal drawings in their family home. He had his first public exhibition at the Municipal Theater in Figueres in 1919. In 1921 his mother died of cancer, and his father married the sister of his deceased wife, which the younger Salvador somewhat resented.

Top Ten Paintings by Yves Tanguy

Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy was born on January 5, 1900 in Paris, France, as the son of a retired navy captain. His parents were both of Breton origin. After his father’s death in 1908, his mother moved back to her native Locronan, Finistère, and he ended up spending much of his youth living with various relatives. In 1918, Yves Tanguy briefly joined the merchant navy before being drafted into the Army, where he befriended Jacques Prévert. At the end of his military service in 1922, he returned to Paris, where he worked various odd jobs. By chance, he stumbled upon a painting by Giorgio de Chirico and was so deeply impressed he resolved to become a painter himself in spite of his complete lack of formal training.

Born in Santiago on 11 November 1911, he was initially an interior decorator, but became disillusioned with this occupation and left for Europe in the mid 1930s. His travels led him to meet artists such as Rene Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Andre Breton, and Le Corbusier.
