Top Ten Saint Helenian Attractions

Saint Helena, named after St Helena of Constantinople, is an island of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, which also includes Ascension Island and the islands of Tristan da Cunha. Saint Helena measures about 16 by 8 km (10 by 5 mi) and has a population of 4,255 (2008). The island was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. It is one of the most isolated islands in the world. For centuries, it was an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa. The British also used the island as a place of exile, most notably for Napoleon I, Dinuzulu ka Cetshwayo and more than 5,000 Boer prisoners. Saint Helena is now Britain’s second oldest remaining colony (now termed overseas territory), after Bermuda.

  1. Gough and Inaccessible Islands

Gough Island, also known historically as Gonçalo Álvares or Diego Alvarez, is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is a dependency of Tristan da Cunha and part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It is uninhabited except for the personnel of a weather station (usually six people) which the South African National Antarctic Program has maintained continually on the island since 1956. It is one of the most remote places with a constant human presence. Close by, Inaccessible Island is an extinct volcano, 14 km² (5.5 sq mi) in area, rising out of the South Atlantic Ocean 45 km (28 mi) southwest of Tristan da Cunha. It is part of the archipelago of Tristan da Cunha, which is part of the overseas territory of the UK, known as Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Throughout its history it has had no permanent population and together with Gough Island is a protected wildlife reserve.
